How Sleep Deprivation Is Interconnected with Diabetes?
Getting less sleep is linked to an increased risk to two different types of diabetes. These two problems are known to be as twin epidemics which is a serious health risk worldwide. The risk of obesity is also linked with the sleeping problems. This is also considered to be a primary factor of getting diabetes and to the metabolic syndrome which is a condition precedes diabetes.
A recent research indicates that sleep deprivation disturbs the glucose metabolism, a process which regulates the blood sugar and converts that sugar to energy. Disturbance to glucose functioning also includes the decrease in insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance which would contribute to an elevated level of blood sugar which leads to diabetes.
There is evidence which has displayed a connection between sleep and diabetes, but you do not understand the connection. According to recent studies, it’s a possible pathway which shows that insufficient sleep causes diabetes. Sleep deprivation also leads to cell infections in the pancreas, which is an important organ that plays an important role in regulating the blood sugar. The endocrine cells present in the pancreas produce hormones which include insulin which helps to regulate and process glucose.
A recent study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of medicine observed the effects of sleep deprivation on the cellular stress and functioning of cells in mice. Age was a factor in the cell function and glucose metabolism. The researchers took two groups of mice, young and old. Both of these groups had chronic sleep deprivation and then the researchers studied their response to the glucose metabolism in the pancreas.
This also included the endocrine cells which were involved in the regulation of blood and sugar. The researcher observed that there was a change in the process. This was a proactive response to the unfolded protein which usually occurs due to age factor and it’s linked to other chronic diseases which include Parkinson and Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes of type 2.
The experts also found out that sleep deprived both the young and the old mice were under cellular stress and increased blood sugar levels. The younger mice had some signs which indicated that their body may cope with some of the alteration instead of the old ones. The older mice had an increased level of protein which indicates the cell death due to sleep deprivation but the younger mice did not show such symptoms. The age factor is a real major reason which does not help to overcome this issue.
The younger mice had a better control over the blood sugar than the elder ones. Acute sleep deprivation in older mice had become a hyperglycemic and insulin were injected to make them stable. According to these studies, it’s been concluded that the mice which were aged had no such control over diabetes instead of the mice who were younger and they had more control over the situation instead of the aged ones. This young mouse did not have much effect instead the elder mice had a great level of effects as they would have been treated by blood sugar injections which include insulin.
